Kazakhstan's Border Guard Service is considering buying Kamov Ka-226T light helicopters, said Igor Karmykov, deputy head of the service's air arm.

"There is urgent need for purchases of light helicopters for aerial reconnaissance and precision flights. In the summer of this year I attended a presentation of the Ka-226T light helicopter in Ust-Kamenogorsk. It's a good aircraft. If the manufacturer heeds all our wishes, the leadership of the Border Guard Service may decide to rearm [the service] with aircraft of this type," Karmykov told a forum in Almaty entitled "Russian-Kazakh Helicopter Projects."

The forum had been organized by the Russian Helicopters company and Almaty's Aircraft Repair Plant No. 405.

Sergei Korolkov, deputy director of the Kazaviaspas company, spoke at the forum about the use of Ka-32A11BC helicopters by rescue parties for the past year. "It is reliable, maneuverable, can fly at a high speed, and has good thrust characteristics. It's at its best when its external load sling system is used in mountain localities," he said.

Korolkov said rescue services would soon buy two more Ka-32A11BC helicopters within a few years. They would "seriously consider" buying Ka-226T's as well, he said. "This helicopter can fly in icing weather conditions, it doesn't need to be kept in a hangar, and so it suits us completely," Korolkov said.

Ka-32A11BC is a multirole helicopter with a coaxial rotor system that can be used in any climate and weather.

Ka-32A11BC helicopters, which are made for the Kazakh Emergency Situations Ministry, are to be used for urgent medical assistance, rescue operations and firefighting.

They are fitted with medical modules and horizontal water cannons. They can also be used in urgent reconstruction work in disaster-stricken areas.

Ka-226T, which Russian Helicopters is offering regional operators in Kazakhstan, also has a coaxial rotor system.

In June this year, its medical evacuation version was successfully shown to potential Kazakh customers such as the Emergency Situations Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Health Ministry, security and natural conservation services and commercial operators.

Russian Helicopters and Aircraft Repair Plant No. 405 are considering setting up a joint venture in Kazakhstan to assemble Ka-226T helicopters.
